In this short video, premiered in 2005 at the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation and produced in collaboration with director Marco Marcassoli, Mastrovito pays tribute to his passion for Queen and Freddie Mercury by editing together a series of clips from the British quartet’s famous 1986 concert in Budapest, set to the music of one of the songs written and performed by the artist for his first EP with the metal band “Madhush.”
In Marcassoli’s montage, the Queen frontman appears to sing the intro to “Black Wings of Despair” with Mastrovito’s voice, reading the lyrics transcribed on his hands: the footage references the famous moment when Mercury performed “avaszi szél vizet áraszt,” a Hungarian folk song.
The work reverses the concept of a musical “cover,” in which the famous band performs an unknown song by an amateur singer (Mastrovito).
Given its short duration, the video was also included in 2006 in the “Haiku” series presented at the 1000eventi Gallery for the solo exhibition “In & Out Of Life.”
