"When my wife saw me redrawing on hundreds of sheets the awful wallpaper from that abandoned apartment in a former communist building on Owsiana Street 1 in Gdańsk, she asked, “Why?” Drawing (and frottage, which I used in this instance) is the first carrier of memory: legend has it that Butades’ daughter from Corinth traced the shadow of her lover’s face on the wall with a line to preserve his memory as he was about to leave. Similarly, the hundreds of sheets, multiples of each other, that make up this work are the lingering memory, the ghost, the spirit of that apartment—and that historical moment—that was demolished along with the entire building just a few days later."
