"I think this is the first time in over twenty years that I’ve depicted interiors, and even more so, houseplants. In early 2024, for my solo show at Wilde Gallery, I was searching for the most mundane subject possible to pair with a “heavy” background. So, I thought of IKEA catalog images: these plant series (of which The Art of War is a part), shaped in wood, painted, and drawn, stand against laser engraved backgrounds that depict book covers, 45s, DVDs, videotapes—modules, least common multiples—all based on contemporary wars. While making them, I thought of Martha Rosler’s collages, in which war enters the home through the windows without anyone even noticing: they seemed incredibly relevant to me"
