Invited by art historian Renato Barilli to participate in a group exhibition on young Italian art on the occasion of the bicentennial of Giuseppe Mazzini's birth, Mastrovito presented—both at the first venue in Gambettola in the fall of 2006 and in January 2007 at the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Bologna—a multimedia work created for the occasion: Johnny.
A fundamental work in the development of his research spanning collage, installation, video, music, and animation, it was inspired by Dalton Trumbo's novel Johnny Got His Gun (1939), the film of the same name (1971), also by Trumbo, and Metallica's famous One (1988).
For the occasion, Mastrovito created a leaflet - attached here - with excerpts from the song, the novel, and an unpublished story by the artist himself.
